Update

Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba has extended his mandate to implement a city-wide curfew, plus close all bars within the capital city.

According to the Mayor’s Office, nonessential travel—on foot or in a vehicle—from the hours of 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. is still prohibited, while all bar tops must remain closed to the public.

The extension of the executive order will expire on August 19.

Original Report

Not only have bars within the capital city been ordered to close their doors due to concerns regarding COVID-19, but there will now be a mandatory curfew within the Jackson city limits.

Yesterday morning, Mayor Chokwe Lumumba issued an executive order saying all bars, taverns, nightclubs, and private lounges must close their doors by 11:50 p.m. Tuesday night—unless they offer takeout or delivery service.

Restaurant-wise, all bar tops must be closed to the public, however, employees can still work from behind the bar to serve alcoholic beverages to patrons at tables or curbside.

“I am committed to addressing the challenges that COVID-19 has wrought for an important sector of our business community. Although we are faced with difficult choices, we will always prioritize saving lives,” Lumumba said in a statement.

Lumumba has also announced that there will be a tentative curfew within the city of Jackson. All non-essential travel from the hours of 12:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m., beginning at midnight on August 6, is prohibited.

Essential businesses that operate within that time frame are required to get documentation from the city of Jackson, verifying its employees’ status as essential.

Both orders will be in effect until August 11.
