A Canton man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his wife.
Myles Flint Johnson, 53, was found guilty of second-degree murder after a three-day trial in the Madison County Circuit Court. He was sentenced to the maximum penalty for the crime without the possibility of parole.
On Jan. 30, 2024, officers with the Canton Police Department were dispatched to a home on East Fulton Street after Johnson called 911, stating his wife had been shot. When they arrived at the scene, law enforcement found Kristi Johnson deceased in the couple’s bed.
Myles Johnson originally told police that his wife had shot herself, but through a subsequent investigation, it was discovered Kristi had been shot in the back. Officers also determined that Kristi died on a Sunday with her husband not calling 911 until the following Tuesday morning.
During the trial, the defendant claimed he accidentally shot his wife after a fight. A long history of domestic violence also came to light, with jury members delivering a guilty verdict after three hours of deliberations.
“This couple showed all the classic signs of the cycle of violence where the victim returned to the abuser many times and the abuse escalated,” District Attorney Bubba Bramlett said. “We hope the guilty verdict in this case provides both closure to the victim’s family, but also acts as a warning to individuals in a violent domestic situation.”
