A Canton man has been sentenced to serve 40 years in prison after killing two individuals in a McDonald’s parking lot in 2020.
On Tuesday, 22-year-old Deondric Green pled guilty to two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Robert Luckett, Jr., and Dekarrie Johnson.
According to court documents, Green and his then-girlfriend were at the McDonald’s located on Highway 22 in Canton when he began shooting at a car with four occupants. All passengers in the vehicle were hit, with two passing away from their injuries.
“This man has essentially been given a life sentence,” Judge Dewey Arthur stated. “McDonald’s parking lots and gas stations are not shooting galleries. We have got to quit killing each other. The streets of the City of Canton are not going to be used for killing sprees.”
Officials believe that Green had seen an individual with which he had a previous altercation before opening fire at the vehicle.
A joint investigation between the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation and the Canton Police Department later uncovered that Green had been shot several months prior, and he was shooting the car at McDonald’s in retaliation to the previous incident.
“Our thoughts are with the survivors and families of the deceased victims of this senseless violence,” District Attorney Bubba Bramlett said. “Retaliation leads to death and destruction for all involved, and oftentimes, innocent bystanders as well.”
Green was sentenced to serve day-for-day without the possibility of early release or parole.
