WASHINGTON, D.C.– California Senator Kevin McCarthy, who was strongly supported by Mississippi Republicans, steps out of the race for U.S. Speaker of the House.
The announcement comes moments after U.S. House Republicans tweet that the meeting to select a candidate.
Mississippi Republicans rallied for McCarthy because of his numerous efforts in telemedicine across the country and in Mississippi. Mississippi congressman Gregg Harper says he and McCarthy had led events before involving expanding telehealth, and that McCarthy had spoken at an event at University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.
Because of McCarthy’s decision to step down, the election for a new speaker has been postponed. News Mississippi will continue to follow this election as new candidates step forward.
