A central Mississippi mother has been taken into custody after having her two-year-old child minimally dressed at a local Walmart during the slate of arctic conditions that took the lives of 12 people in the state.
Byram Police confirm that 26-year-old Kambria Darby was arrested on Monday, January 17 after concerned customers at the store notified law enforcement about a young child who had been brought into the store clothed only in a diaper while the outdoor temperatures were around 20 degrees with brutal wind chills.
A viral video surfaced of the mother hauling the mostly unclothed child in a grocery cart while the toddler was seen visibly shivering. Darby, in the video, was accosted by others in the store, but was aggressive in tone, vulgar, and dismissive of the concerns about her child’s lack of attire.
Officers responded to the scene and arrested Darby in the store’s parking lot. Paramedics tended to the toddler, who was said to be freezing and shaking from the cold. Child Protective Services came to the location and allowed the two-year-old to be placed in the custody of a relative.
Darby is charged with child neglect. She was booked into the Hinds County Detention Center.
