Brookhaven school under social media fire after dress code punishment

BROOKHAVEN, MISS– An upset uncle’s Facebook post has gone viral and received national attention after he ranted about his 9 year-old niece’s dress code punishment, enforced by a Brookhaven school.

In the post, which has garnered over 400 comments and nearly 47,000 shares, Robbie Nettles said Brookhaven Elementary sent his niece and another student to in-school suspension (ISS) over their outfits, which the school deemed “form-fitting.”

Nettles said the issue with the dress code was more about body-shaming and less about discipline.

“Does my niece’s round belly OFFEND you?” Nettles posted. “Obviously, her attire was too form fitting…Apparently, it is acceptable to body shame a nine year old.”

Nettles added that the dress code is open for interpretation, and that the school should opt for uniforms if dress amongst the youngsters is so important.

The girl’s mother brought another change of clothes to the school, but that outfit was also deemed inappropriate.

School district officials would not comment on the matter, but said the school dress code policy was followed.
