One officer with the Madison Police Department has died and another from Brandon has received significant injuries from a standoff that began early on Thursday morning.
The shootout, which was located in the Crossgates neighborhood, was prompted after officers with the Brandon Police Department responded to a call reporting a possible hostage situation at approximately 1:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers discovered that a man had taken a woman hostage after a domestic dispute and had barricaded the two inside the residence.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has released that the subject immediately began firing shots at police, resulting in the injury of one Brandon police officer.
Hours later, police convinced the man to release the woman from the house.
Additional agencies, including the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, Pearl Police, Madison Police, and at least one SWAT team then responded to the location of the standoff.
The man remained barricaded in the residence with unknown injuries until Randy Tyler with the Madison Police Department entered the home.
Both Tyler — who previously served as Ridgeland Police Chief — and the suspect received fatal injuries, ending the standoff at 10:00 a.m.
The injured officer is currently in stable condition at a local hospital.
The MBI is assessing the incident and gathering evidence. Upon completing the investigation, agents will share their findings with the Attorney General’s Office.
