NEW ORLEANS, La.–If you have a business on the Miss. Gulf Coast and were expecting one of those settlements from BP soon, you might not want to bank on it, for now. A judge temporarily suspended those payments last week.
BP has been fighting back, claiming that not everyone who has put in a claim is really owed the money. The cash was coming from BP following the 2010 oil spill that affected the economy of several states, including Mississippi, when oil reached the beach.
BP says the payments are costing them hundreds of millions of dollars and the company may be tiring of bleeding money after fines and settlements.
The claim by BP is that many of the claims are not directly related to the oil spill, and the judge will be looking at that.
Meanwhile, you can still file a claim, it just may not be paid out until the matter is settled.
