Bond denied for pair of teens allegedly involved in shooting at South Mississippi Fair

Akealeis McKenzie (left) and Jalen Shade (right), both 18 years old, were booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Facility shortly after 11 p.m. on Saturday for a shooting at the South Mississippi Fair.

A pair of teenagers facing charges in connection with a shooting at the South Mississippi Fair have been denied bond.

Akealeis McKensie, 18, and Jailen Shade, 18, will remain behind bars as a judge determined the two pose a threat to society while also being a flight risk.

Investigators report that the incident occurred on Saturday at the annual event in Laurel due to an escalated altercation. Darren Duff, 17, was shot in the leg once gunfire rang out, though police do not think he was the intended target. Duff was hospitalized but is expected to make a full recovery.

McKenzie faces attempted murder and possession of a stolen firearm charges. Shade is charged with attempted murder. Both are being housed in the Jones County Detention Facility.

The South Mississippi Fair was closed for the remainder of Saturday night as a result of the shooting. On Sunday, officials announced that “after careful consideration,” the fair would reopen and run through its planned end date of Saturday, Oct. 26.

“The safety and well-being of our community remains our top priority,” a statement from the South Mississippi Fair reads. “We are working closely with security and local law enforcement to ensure enhanced security measures for the remainder of the event. We are grateful and extend our gratitude to security, our local law enforcement, and first responders for their swift action in keeping everyone safe.”
