Lawmakers have agreed to pass a bill that would ban immigration sanctuary policies in the state, even though there are no designated sanctuary cities in Mississippi. Senate Bill 2710 is headed to the Governor’s desk to be signed into law.
It would prevent state agencies and public colleges from stopping their employees from asking someone’s immigration status. These agencies also can’t give legal status to people who entered the country without permission.
The only policy the bill would directly undo is Jackson’s 2010 ordinance that prevents police officers from asking about immigration status.
Once Governor Bryant signs it, the law goes into effect July 1.
