STURGIS, Miss.–It’s a Mississippi tradition that stopped for a few years, but it’s back this weekend. If you love bikes, barbecue and making friends from all over, then maybe you’ll want to hop on your hog and head to Sturgis for the bike rally.
“We finally got some political issues worked out and the town decided they want the rally back,” said spokesman Don Henson, who said the focus is on rebuilding after a three-year hiatus.
Wednesday the town was already filling up with RVs and bikes.
Dusty Dendy loves the rally so much that, even though he lives just down the road in Ackerman, he brings his RV and his Harley every time they have a rally.
“It’s the camaraderie,” he said. “It’s like a big family reunion. You’ve got a lot of cooking going on, you meet new friends and all your old friends come back. The big thing is you get to see all the bikes.”
He has a 2006 Heritage Harley, with all 1961 parts on it. He revved it up for News Mississippi.
Dendy said he has met people from all over at the rally. He said mostly he’s met people from Texas, Louisiana and Alabama, but that people come from much further away than that, too.
“We were very disappointed when the rally didn’t happen and we’re glad it’s back. They have good food vendors and very good entertainment at night.”
The rally will feature bike rides, of course, in addition to the food, entertainment and camping.
