Three extra days of preparation proved beneficial for Saints quarterback Derek Carr as he led his team to a 38-27 road win over the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
Carr threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns as New Orleans (4-4) found a much-needed win after some early-game struggles. Down 17-7 in the second quarter, the Saints went on an eight-play scoring drive capped off by a 20-yard touchdown run from Taysom Hill to pull within a field goal.
After holding the Colts (3-5) to a field goal on the following possession, the Saints found the end zone yet again with Rashid Shaheed exploding for a 58-yard score to take a 21-20 lead into the locker room at halftime. New Orleans then played mostly clean football in the second half, never relinquishing the lead on the way to their fourth win of the season.
“That was a good team we played and a good team they had,” Saints head coach Dennis Allen told reporters after the game. “We had to overcome a little adversity, and we have to get right back to work. I’ve been telling you guys that we have a good team. Now, we have to put it together and be consistent.”
Leading the Saints out of the backfield was Alvin Kamara, who had 110 total yards on 21 touches with two touchdowns. Shaheed hauled in three receptions for 153 yards with the one touchdown. Hill added another touchdown in the second half for his first multi-score game of the season.
Heading into the week, one of the biggest storylines here in Mississippi was Brandon native and Colts quarterback Gardner Minshew going up against Brandon native and Saints linebacker Demario Davis. While Minshew didn’t get the win, he did throw for 213 yards on 23 of 41 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. Davis, on the other hand, had six tackles on the day – including one hit on Minshew.
Next up for the New Orleans Saints will be a home game against the Chicago Bears (2-5) on Sunday, Nov. 5. Kickoff at Caesars Superdome is set for 12 p.m. CT.
