Expansion at Batson Children’s Hospital, the state’s only pediatric hospital, could begin by the year’s end, according to officials from the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Currently, an average of 100 babies are cared for at the hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), but it is only equipped for around 30 infants. A new NICU with private rooms is included in the plans for the expansion.
Along with a new NICU, there will be additional private rooms for the pediatric ICU wing, a new imaging facility, more surgical facilities, and an addition that will allow the affiliated children’s clinics to be adjacent to the hospital.
While UMMC officials hope to break ground by the end of the year, the project is still in planning stages.
Funding for the project is coming from the Campaign for the Children’s of Mississippi.
