The current state license plates featuring a picture of blues legend B.B. King’s guitar “Lucille” along with the phrase, Birthplace of America’s Music will stay as is because state legislators did not set aside funds to replace them.
The Department of Revenue was scheduled to release new license plates in October, however, Kathy Waterbury with the Department of Revenue said no money was appropriated.
As a rule, license plates are changed every 5 years.
Waterbury said the Department of Revenue will take up the issue of a new license plate picture with legislatures during their next session.
Waterbury added that beginning in January of 2018 there will be seven characters on the license plate as opposed to the six characters that are currently on Mississippi license plates.
However, Waterbury said that “Lucille” will remain on the plate for the foreseeable future.
