JACKSON, Miss. – There has never been a President of the United States from Mississippi, but Kentucky born and Mississippi raised Jefferson Davis was President of the Confederacy. According to Civil War Historian James M. McPherson, Davis is usually portrayed in a negative light. In McPherson’s new book, “Embattled Rebel,” he tries to shine new light on a man who was on the wrong side of history.
“Much of that negative actually came from southern sources because Davis was widely blamed within the south for mistakes and ineptitude that ultimately lost the civil war,” said McPherson. “I think under his leadership the confederacy probably had its best chance.”
