BILOXI, MISS– When Hurricane Katrina was edging closer and closer to the shores of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Highway 49 was a floodgate of people scattering north. Rebecca Powers was staying put.
Powers was an anchor for WLOX when Katrina made landfall. She says the rule was get your family to safety, then hang back for the coverage.
Powers and her husband Ben held each other on top of a car at a neighbor’s house during the storm in order to survive. When the national media networks came in, the journalist in Powers was excited to see the coverage.
Instead, when primetime approached, she was angry.
