A standoff with an armed suspect holding a toddler captive in Byhalia ended peacefully Monday afternoon.
Law enforcement closed off Highway 309 in Byhalia Monday morning amid an ongoing standoff with an armed suspect who was holding a toddler captive.
Marshall County Sheriff’s Office officials reported that deputies were called to a domestic disturbance Sunday night where a suspect was armed. A mother and her toddler were also inside the residence.
Early Monday, officials said the mother was able to escape the home and notify police, but the child remained in the home and was considered a hostage.
The sheriff’s office reported that the child was released unharmed around 1:30 p.m. Monday afternoon. A few hours later, 36-year-old Casey Henson was taken into custody without incident after tear house was thrown into the house.
The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office and SWAT team joined Marshall County deputies as multiple agencies worked to resolve the situation peaceably.
According to the Marshall County School District, school bus pickups and student arrival were affected in the area as police attempt to isolated the threat to public safety. Officials say Highway 309 has been reopened to traffic.
Henson now faces charges of domestic violence aggravated assault and felon in possession of a firearm, though more charges are possible.
