The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks will once allow some eligible hunters to participate in special alligator hunting at Pelahatchie Bay in May.
Beginning Thursday at 10 a.m., prospective alligator hunters will be able to purchase an application, choose a potential hunting zone within Pelahatchie Bay, and submit the application for drawing by a third-party entity by February 8 at 10 a.m.
Hunters will be able to choose from two hunt periods — May 3-6 and May 10-13.
Applicants looking to purchase a Pelahatchie Bay alligator possession permit must be at least 16 years old and have a valid Mississippi hunting license. In addition, one is not eligible to purchase an alligator permit unless he or she has one of the following valid licenses:
-
- Sportsman, All Game H/F, Small Game H/F, Apprentice Sportsman, Apprentice All Game, Apprentice Small Game, Senior Exempt, Disabled Exempt, or Lifetime license
- Lifetime license holders are exempt from the purchase of the Alligator Hunting License
Hunter’s education requirements do apply. If one has been certified in hunter education and is unable to attend a hunter education course before the hunt, that individual may purchase an apprentice license instead of a combination type license. The apprentice license is available as a one-time purchase for hunters who have never been certified in hunter education. It is valid for only one year.
Selected winners will be notified by email on February 13 and February 21.
Applications can be acquired online, at any location that sells Mississippi hunting and fishing licenses, or by phone at 1-800-546-4868.
