Applications will soon be open for the third round of Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund (MOSTF) money.
During this year’s session, the legislature appropriated $12 million to the fund, which aims to aid projects that improve the overall wellness of Mississippi’s outdoors. Applications open Aug. 1 and must be submitted by Sept. 3, 2024.
Since the MOSTF was created in 2022, over $24 million has been awarded across 53 projects.
“This board has successfully awarded millions of dollars to 53 quality projects that will enhance our vital nature resources, complete critical conservation efforts, and bolster outdoor recreation for all Mississippians,” Gov. Tate Reeves said.
Additionally, the MOSTF opened the door for outdoor projects to receive further federal and non-state matching funds. Justin Brooks, a member of the MOSTF Coalition, vouched that matching funds are vital in preserving, conserving, and improving Mississippi’s outdoors scene while revamping recreational components such as walking and hiking trails.
“One of the best attributes of the [MOSTF] is it provides benefits for everyone. You don’t have to hunt or fish to appreciate the investments made throughout the state,” Brooks said. “These projects are providing improvements and enhancements that benefit a broad variety of outdoor enthusiasts. The continued funding commitment from the legislature allows applicants to unite matching resources from partners to help lower the cost of projects.”
Only state agencies, municipalities, and non-government organizations are eligible to apply. Officials ask those interested in applying to read the guidelines carefully before submitting.
“All applications will be considered, but there is a clear direction placed in the Mississippi Outdoor Stewardship Act,” MOSTF Executive Director Ricky Flynt said. “We want our applicants to understand the goals and priorities of the MOSTF before they commit the time and effort required to apply.”
Following application reviews, the MOSTF Board will score each application and projects will be ranked prior to be considered for funding. Awarded projects will be announced by the end of October 2024.
