HATTIESBURG, Miss.–If you go to Southern Miss, or have a student there, then you probably got an Eagle Alert Thursday. It was another threat posted to the social media app “Yik Yak”, which anonymously threatened “members of the University”.
This comes the same week that Brandon Hardin, a USM business major, was arrested and charged with making similar threats on the same app.
Thursday’s message threatened action at 6:30 p.m., which never happened.
“University Police are finding no corroborating evidence to support an active threat to the Hattiesburg campus related to a Yik Yak post earlier this evening,” said a press release from the USM Police. “UPD is working with Yik Yak to identify the person responsible for the post.”
In Hardin’s case, Yik Yak was forthcoming and may have helped police nail him down.
Police are still urging everyone on campus to stay vigilant and “report any suspicious activity that might appear out of the ordinary to UPD at 601.266.4986.”
