Nine nursing facility residents in central Mississippi will enjoy Thanksgiving Day with loved ones at their family home, thanks to a goodwill project from AMR.
With the project called “Home for the Holiday,” AMR will donate round trip ambulance or wheelchair van transportation on Thanksgiving Day for selected nursing home patients, to and from their family residences. The nursing homes selected the participating residents earlier this month.
The patients are between 53 and 93 years old. Nine nursing homes will participate, with one patient per facility. Eight patients reside in Hinds County nursing facilities and one in a facility in Smith County.
Stan Alford, operations manager for AMR, said, “Anyone who has been away from home on Thanksgiving knows the longing to be with family that special day. With this project, AMR helps a few elders go home for that great tradition.”
Alford said, “AMR’s paramedics and EMTs look forward to this project every year. Our crews often build personal relationships with nursing facility staffs and their residents, sometimes providing care in situations stressful for all. ‘Home for the Holiday’ enables our dispatchers and crews, facility staffs, their residents and the residents’ families to interact in a warm light.”
This is the twenty-sixth year AMR has conducted the project in central Mississippi. This is the fourth year AMR has run “Home for the Holiday” on Thanksgiving. Prior to 2014, the project was on Christmas Day.
