Officials have announced plans to construct an amphitheater within the Jackson Zoo in an effort to revitalize it and reverse a trend of dwindling foot traffic.
On Monday, the capital city’s Department of Planning and Economic Development unveiled plans for the new amphitheater. Per city leaders, the entertainment venue will serve to enhance the visitor experience by providing a dedicated space for live performances, educational programs, and community events.

The project, designed by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates, Inc., includes a performance space, an enhanced wetland experience, and improved pedestrian connectivity to key areas within the zoo.
Key features of the proposed amphitheater include:
- A dedicated performance stage for concerts, theater, and community events
- Seating is designed to accommodate a range of audience sizes
- A natural setting that blends with the zoo’s existing landscape
- Enhanced accessibility and connections to the zoo entrance and pedestrian pathways
City officials are hopeful that the amphitheater will open a new stream of revenue for the zoo, which has been hemorrhaging financially for several years due to a sharp decline in visitors. At this time, construction on the amphitheater is expected to start in July and wrap up in December.
