Accused Copiah County Family Killer Indicted

COPIAH COUNTY, Miss. – It has been nine months since a family was found dead in an abandoned shack in rural Copiah County. Their accessed killer, 42-year-old Timothy Burns, has now been indicted and will be in court Friday morning for his arraignment.

The trial is for the murder of seven-year-old Jaiden Hill and Atira Hughes-Smith. The indictment also revealed that Atria Smith may have been raped.

Investigators believe Atira Hughes-Smith and her son walked in on Burns killing husband, Laterry Smith. Afterwards, the two were kidnapped and taken to the shack where they were murdered. Investigators also think the boy’s stepfather was killed before his body was taken to the house.

A separate trail will be held for Laterry Smith in Hinds County.
