RANKIN COUNTY, Miss.–What was likely an accidental shooting Thursday has left a five-year-old girl in the hospital. It happened when her brother, who is 9, got a hold of a .22 caliber pistol at the family’s home in south Rankin County.
Sheriff Bryan Bailey told media that the girl ended up shot near her collarbone and that the bullet is lodged in her spine.
A neighbor heard the brother calling out for help and called 911. The girl ended up being airlifted to UMMC in Jackson.
Bailey said that his department is investigating how the brother ended up with the gun.
