Mississippi Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann said there was an unusually high number of absentee ballots during this year’s midterm elections on Tuesday.
During the last midterm election, in 2014, about 25,000 ballots were requested. This year there were 69,902.
“Absentee ballots requested were more than double the numbers from 2014, and absentee requests are usually a good indication of voter turnout.” said Hosemann. “Governance begins at the ballot box, so we are always encouraged when we see citizens interested in the candidates and the issues.”
