Alligator Hunting Season Around the Corner

JACKSON, Miss. – It’s almost time to register for Mississippi’s alligator hunting season. Registration will begin June 2 through June 9.

This year the hunt will take place August 29 through September 8, lasting ten days.

Ricky Flint, Alligator Program Coordinator for The Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks said, “It’s an opportunity for people to hunt alligators statewide on public waterways. The state is divided into seven geographical zones.”

People interested in participating must enter an online application at mdwfp.com, be a resident of Mississippi, have a Mississippi hunting license, and at least 16 years old.

Flint said, “We keep records on four categories for alligator hunters and that is the largest and heaviest female and male alligator. All the records were beaten last year.”

You may remember the huge alligators caught last year that made national headlines. A group caught a gator breaking the state record, then an hour later a different group caught an even bigger alligator breaking that record.

Two male gators, over 13 feet in length and 720 pounds were caught. Both shattered the previous state record of 697.5. The biggest one was 727 pounds and captured in the Mississippi River near Claiborne County by Dustin Bockman of Vicksburg.
