RANKIN COUNTY, Miss.- A Hinds County Sheriff’s Deputy and his wife were found dead in their home by police Wednesday.
Amber Smith, 27, and Chris Smith, 34, were found in their home on Caledonian Blvd. around 9 p.m. after officers responded to a call reporting shots heard.
Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said, “Smith’s two children came to a neighbor’s house and said that they feared that her dad may have shot their mother.”
The two kids were inside the home when the gunshots were fired. The couple had a 4-year-old child together and Amber Smith had a 9-year-old child from a previous relationship. The two children were not injured and are now in the care of their grandmother.
The shooting is being investigated as a murder-suicide, Bailey said. Investigators are awaiting results from the crime lab for confirmation, he said.
The oldest child told investigators that the couple had been arguing. Bailey said, “The parents moved to the master bedroom of the house, shut the door, locked it and the children heard two gunshots.”
A gun was found near the bodies in the bedroom.
Chris Smith started with the department in 2004, and most recently worked as a narcotics investigator with a specialized unit, authorities said.
