BYHALIA, Miss. — It was the murder of an off duty Chicago Police officer by a gang member in 2010 that brought a lawsuit on a Mississippi gun shop, but now that lawsuit has been dropped.
Officer Thomas Wortham IV’s parents accused the owner of Ed’s Pawn Shop and Salvage Yard in Marshall County of knowing that the sale of the gun eventually used in their son’s murder was illegal.
Mississippi resident Michael Elliot bought three guns at the shop and handed them over to Rust College student Quawi Gates, who at the time was running a gun trafficking ring. The deal was made for $100 which Elliot needed for gas Money.
Under law, gun sellers are supposed to notify the federal government if someone buys two or more guns within five days. In a settlement, the pawn shop agreed to report multiple sales within 30 days of a purchases and keep video record for up to three years of all handgun sales.
