JACKSON, Miss.–You won’t be able to light up a joint legally in Mississippi any time soon, under any circumstance, despite the Cannabis Oil Bill becoming law last week. Gov. Phil Bryant told News Mississippi this week he does not foresee legalizing any marijuana that uses THC, the substance in pot that makes you high.
“It (the Cannabis Oil Bill) was one that I thought a great deal about,” said Bryant, “it was worked on during the legislative session to make sure that it was like other narcotics-related pharmaceuticals. You have to get a prescription. It has to go from a physician to the University Medical center.”
Bryant said that the process may even be more restrictive than for some other narcotics.
“But when I though about those children and the possibility that they may be helped, it was the right thing to do. But I can assure that this is not opening the door and there’s no further expansion that I see in the future.”
The new law allows for the use of an extract from the marijuana plant that does not contain any chemicals that could make you high.
It would benefit children who suffer from a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome.
