JACKSON, Miss.–Tornado watches for Mississippi had been canceled by Monday morning, but another round of storms was expected by afternoon and evening, with heavy rain being the main threat. And, that’s not welcome news for areas already flooded last week.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Brad Bryant was keeping watch overnight Sunday and said early Monday that the Weather Service office had not gotten any reports of damage or major flooding, although there were some counties that had flash flood warnings issued overnight: Yazoo, Leake, Scott and Rankin.
“With all the flooding that we had over the past week, we really don’t need a whole big dumping of rain on top of those areas, and unfortunately that’s what we’re getting,” he said.
Although the tornado watches had been canceled, Bryant said they were still on the lookout.
“It looks like the tornado threat is not very high and the severe weather threat is not high either. The main concern is heavy rain.”
The next round of severe weather was expected after a break of several hours.
