JACKSON, Miss. — A bill that could bump up how much your sheriff makes to $75,000 to $99,000 a year is now headed to the governor’s desk. That bill passed the Mississippi Senate Tuesday. The pay increase depends on the county’s population. Some lawmakers question whether or not small counties would be able to afford the increases without raising taxes. An amendment that would require county supervisors to approve the raise failed.
The bill would also require 20 hours of additional training for those sheriffs each year.
