Continue to stay weather aware as a large portion of Mississippi braces for its first round of severe/winter weather of 2021. According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service, several inches of snow could fall between this evening into Monday morning.

North Mississippi (NWS Memphis)
Snow will begin to spread into portions of Northwest Mississippi and East Central Arkansas around midnight tonight. The snow will continue to spread north toward the Mississippi-Tennessee state border by sunrise. Light accumulations are expected across portions of North Mississippi from Charleston to Houston. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for this area, beginning at midnight and continuing through Monday afternoon. Roadways could become slick especially bridges and overpasses. Snow will continue across the Mid-South during the day on Monday and will begin to taper off from west to east during the afternoon into the evening hours. Total snowfall accumulations will be around an inch across portions of North Mississippi from Charleston to Houston. Elsewhere across the Mid-South, could see a dusting. Roadways could become slick again late Monday night into early Tuesday as temperatures fall into the 20s.
Central Mississippi (NWS Jackson)
A winter storm will impact the region from this evening through Monday morning. Mostly snow is expected north of a Winnsboro to Kosciusko to Columbus line, with a mix of snow, sleet, and rain expected south to a Brookhaven to Meridian line. South of this, impacts are not anticipated. In the elevated area, accumulations of 2-4″ are expected with higher amounts possible. Surrounding this, amounts of up to 2″ are possible in the limited area. Travel will likely be impacted across much of the area during the Monday morning commute.
With the expected conditions, the Mississippi Department of Transportation urges you to exercise caution if you must get out on the roadways during the winter weather event.
- Remember, ice will form on bridges and overpasses quicker than the road.
- Slow down; should winter weather conditions become present, black ice can form.
- Allow more space between the vehicles around you.
- Brake early and gently to avoid skidding, and never slam on the brakes.
- Avoid distractions, such as talking or texting on a cell phone.
