JACKSON, Miss. — It’s not just Valentine’s Day, Friday is the birthday of Charles Darwin, the man who introduced the theory of evolution.
The University of Southern Miss will celebrate, for the first time ever, Darwin Day. Although evolution goes against the religious teaching of a supreme being, God, creating man, Mississippi Pastor David Eldridge does not see the Darwin Day celebration as a threat to the religious community. “It just shows that our society is becoming much more diverse,” he said. “The acceptance of different viewpoints, especially a materialistic theory, as kind of the world view is being adopted across the word and we would want to have a society that can handle diversity; so I would never be repressive and say we should not allow that.”
Eldridge is Pastor of Calvary Baptist church in Tupelo.
