Recently, Governor Tate Reeves delayed the beginning of the academic year for 7-12th graders in eight Mississippi counties, however, he is allowing school districts within the other 74 counties to make their own decisions regarding their plan to reopen.
“Here’s the bottom line: we have to balance the very real risk of the virus and the lifelong damage of school closures,” Reeves said in his daily briefing on August 4th. “The best way to do accomplish that is to provide guidelines, allow local school leaders to tailor them, and step in with the authority of the state government where it is absolutely necessary.”
One of those guidelines mandated by the governor includes masks being worn by all students and faculty—inside or outside.
Even though everything could be altered due to the COVID-19 outbreak possibly worsening, many school districts have already announced their plan for the 2020-2021 academic year.
