The Mississippi State Department of Health is reporting 572 new cases of COVID-19.

Today’s report brings Mississippi’s total number of cases up to 61,125. With the confirmation of 8 additional deaths, 1,711 Mississippians have now passed away from the virus.

Despite today’s relatively low number of new cases, the state saw it’s new one-day high last Thursday and over the weekend, Dr. Ashish K. Jha, the Director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, expressed concern that Mississippi will soon become the number one state in terms of cases per capita.

Currently, Mississippi is 6th in terms of cases per 100,000 residents, according to the New York Times.

Hospital data for today’s report is not yet available.

As for some positive news, the MSDH is now able to estimate that 42,391 Mississippians have recovered from COVID-19.
