Shannon High School has identified the 16-year-old student who died during football practice on Tuesday as Ja Kobe Cooper.
“Our Red Raider family is heartbroken due to the loss of one of our own. Ja Kobe Cooper was passionate for all aspects of life, he was extremely respectful to his teachers and administrators, and he was a joy to be around. Whether we knew him as a student, as a football player, or as a classmate, he was a valued member of our Red Raider family, and we will continue to miss him,” the school said in a statement.
According to the school, there will be a candlelight vigil and balloon release to celebrate Ja Kobe on Thursday, June 18th at 7:30 pm at the high school. If you would like to participate or assist with the vigil, please call us at Shannon High School at (662)767-9566.
Cooper collapsed on the field Tuesday morning and was rushed to a local hospital. No cause of death is known at this time.

A high school football player in North Mississippi died at practice Tuesday morning.
According to a statement issued by the Lee Country School District, the 16-year-old Shannon High School student collapsed on the field before being taken to a local hospital.
“The Lee County School District is saddened to announce the death of one of our Shannon High School students.
During a routine football practice this morning at Shannon High School, the 16-year-old player collapsed on the field. Emergency personnel were immediately called to the scene, and the student was transported to North Mississippi Medical Center.
The Lee County School District and the Shannon Red Raider Family extend our deepest sympathy to this young man’s family. Next of kin are being notified before any additional information is released.”
