QUITMAN, Miss.–A wreck in Clarke County was being called one of the worst that Sheriff Todd Kemp has ever seen. Two people died after their truck burned when it was hit behind by an 18-wheeler Thursday about noon.
It happened on Hwy. 45. All three vehicles involved were headed south when the 18-wheeler hit the pickup from behind, which hit the car in front of it. The wreck dragged for a quarter mile down the highway.
Kemp told WTOK the truck burst into flames and troopers and the truck driver tried to put it out. But, the fire extinguishers were no match for the heat of the fire and the two people inside the truck died.
“It’s been a long time since I saw one this bad, and with this length,” Kemp told the TV station. “We’re talking almost a quarter mile accident involving three wrecks. Usually, they’re confined to a smaller area.”
The driver of the car was in the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
