BILXOI, Miss. — Roughly 300 years ago French colonists settled in Biloxi. When Hurricane Katrina hit the Mississippi gulf coast in 2005, the Moran Art Studio in Biloxi was destroyed, revealing the oldest French colonial burial site in the county.
From 2005 to 2009 the burial site was excavated by Southern Miss professor, Marie Danford, and her students. They finished studying the DNA of the bodies this past summer.
Friday morning the colonists were reburied during a ceremony at the same site.
