The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill this week that would offer a path to citizenship to more than two million undocumented immigrants. The legislation would provide amnesty for illegal immigrants that also includes dreamers who were brought to the U.S. as children.
“I find it reprehensible that Democrats want to provide mass amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants instead of focusing on the actual crisis on our border. We should not pass legislation that rewards illegal behavior and incentivizes hundreds of thousands of more people to march toward our borders. We have immigration loopholes that demand Congressional action and Democrats have chosen to pass a bill that won’t see the light of day in the Senate.”
Palazzo went on to say that in fiscal year ’19 alone, Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) apprehended over half a million illegal immigrants at the southern border. In the first three weeks of May, CBP has apprehended more immigrants along the southern border than the entirety of April.
The legislation which passed the Democrat-controlled House on a vote of 237-187 was opposed by Palazzo who said the bill does not include reforms to close the existing loopholes in the immigration system. Republican Congressmen Trent Kelly and Michael Guest also opposed the bill, while Democrat Congressman Bennie Thompson, who also serves as the House Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee voted in favor of the bill.
