Southern Miss has brought in a former NFL defensive back to coach up their secondary.
The university has confirmed that Akeem Davis will become the new CB coach after serving on the staff as a grad assistant in 2018. The position became available after Eddie Hicks recently left to join the Charlotte 49ers coaching staff.
Davis, a Laurel native, played his college ball at Memphis where he racked up over 150 tackles. When Davis arrived at Memphis, Jay Hopson (the current head coach at USM) was the defensive coordinator for the Tigers.
At the end of playing career at Memphis, Davis went undrafted in 2013 and became a grad assistant on the Tigers’ staff. One year later, he was signed by the Washington Redskins. After he was waived in 2015, Davis bounced from team to team during the 2015 and 2016 seasons before getting back into coaching.
The Golden Eagles are attempting to improve on a 6-5 2018 season, and they’ll open spring practice next Tuesday on March 19th.
