President Trump has declared a national emergency to put more funds toward securing the southern Border and most Mississippi lawmakers are defending the President’s decision.
U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who visited the border recently, described scenes of organized chaos with hundreds of illegal immigrants trying to make their way across the border each night. The processing alone she says is taking too much time.
“It is truly a national emergency,” Hyde-Smith said. “It reminds me of when we were going through Katrina… How many more days of this can we stand? You know, there’s got to be a break for us here. We’ve got to get supplies in, we’ve got to get some utilities turned back on and when I went to the border, it was the same thing. I mean, it’s like we brought in this many last night that we caught. We are having to process them and guess what, tonight it’s going to happen again.”
Hyde-Smith said the border security agents have been looking to the federal government for some time asking when they would be given relief.
“That was three, four, or five years ago when the numbers aren’t even what they are today,” Hyde-Smith said. “I cannot imagine the job that border patrollers have right now. Because their job is to defend that border. When you are processing that many when that many have to be fed. When you have to get blankets for that many. You have to put them on this bus, and they bring them in to MacAllen, or they bring them into this staging area. You get their information and you have to feed them. You’ve got border patrol agents passing out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with juice when they need to be on the border, but the flood gates are open. When you are down there and you see hundreds. I don’t see how they keep their sanity managing this day after day, waiting on some help.”
However, other’s don’t feel the same. Congressman Bennie Thompson, Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee in the House said there is no crisis at the border, instead blaming the controversy on President Trump.
Congressman Steven Palazzo berated Democrats in Washington for their lack of support of the President’s border security initiatives.
“The Democrats’ game plan is to obstruct and destruct,” Palazzo said. “I don’t know how long they want to keep doing this because the American people are waking up to the fact that what is so hard about securing our border to keep elite criminal aliens from coming over that want to do us harm. The American people, Democrat or Republican, they want their children to be safe, they want a good job, they want security.”
Palazzo went on to say that because Democrats are pushing for open borders, they are essentially welcoming in drugs to the country with open arms.
“We are the party that is doing all of these things [pushing for security] and the Democrats seem to want this open border concept,” said Palazzo. “They are saying come on in, bring your fentanyl, your black tar heroin, and your criminal aliens.”
Hyde-Smith added that while there has to be a legal process, the opposition from the left has become ridiculous when the Democrats have proposed border security in previous years.
“I don’t see how they can continue to do it with what appears to be no relief in sight for them,” said Hyde-Smith. “There is a legal process and these guys [Democrats] are circumventing that legal process and we are having to deal with that. I just wish that the people who are opposing this would have to go down there and work those stations for one 24-hour shift and they would see that this is an emergency.”
She went on to say the majority of drugs that come into the country are making their way into the U.S. illegally from Mexico.
“Over 90% of the heroin in this country came from Mexico and it is coming right across that border. Anybody who says we don’t need security, we don’t need a wall, we need to tear down the walls we have, they are not logical, they are not reasonable, they are in no position to judge what is going on down there until they have lived it.”
