The race for Secretary of State has a new candidate.
Current Southern District Public Service Commissioner Sam Britton (R) has officially announced his candidacy for Secretary of State. Britton made the announcement at the State Capitol with his wife, Robin. In a news release, Britton called himself a conservative outsider that ‘President Trump can trust as an ally in Mississippi” while saying his experience with the PSC would translate to this office.
“I am a conservative outsider with a proven track record of solving difficult problems such as the Kemper County Project. As the Southern District PSC Commissioner, my work on Kemper saved the ratepayers billions of dollars,” Britton said. “As Secretary of State, I know that I can help lead the fight to get government out of our lives and focus on policy priorities that will lead to rising incomes for all Mississippians.”
Prior to his term as Public Service Commissioner, Britton spent his career in business and finance.
“I have a clear understanding of how to make our government work more like the private sector,” he said. “President Trump is leading this fight in Washington. I endorsed President Trump early in the ‘16 GOP primary and I know that he can count on me as a strong ally in Mississippi.”
Britton joins state Senator Michael Watson (R) in the race to replace Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, who is currently running for Lt. Governor. Just yesterday, Governor Bryant put his full support behind Watson.

An August primary will be held ahead of November’s election.
