One candidate has entered the field hoping to become the next Northern District Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
Earlier this month, Mike Tagert announced that he would not seek re-election to the post that he has held since 2011. Now, Assistant Secretary of State Jeremy Martin (R) has filed to enter the race to replace Tagert.
“I am running for Transportation Commissioner to serve the citizens of North Mississippi,” Martin said. “My background in education, economic development, and public service uniquely qualifies me for this position. As Transportation Commissioner, I will use my experience to improve our roads, grow our economy, and make our government work for all Mississippians,” Martin said.
Martin has worked under Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann since 2008, and his responsibilities have included implementing the state’s voter identification law, training election officials, observing elections, completing five cemetery receiverships, facilitating the creation of six entertainment districts, and working with various economic development entities.
Martin is from Tupelo and attended ICC before earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Ole Miss.
The Northern District Commissioner oversees 33 North Mississippi counties.
An August primary will be held ahead of November’s election.
