The Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure is warning against a potential scam.

According to a press release, the board was contacted by a licensee who stated that an individual contacted their office, by phone, asking for confidential information.

The caller identified themselves as an “Agent of the State Medical Board”. The licensee told the Board that the caller confirmed specific information, such as medical license and NPI number (National Provider Index number), which is easily accessible via the internet on any licensee of the Board.

The caller then stated the licensee was under investigation and attempted to obtain personal information of the licensee.

After this notice, the Board sent an email to all licensees that they should not provide personal information over the phone without first verifying the identity of the person calling.

The Board also clarified that a phone call would not be made to tell a licensee that they are under investigation.

Should someone need to verify the identity of an Investigator/Agent or other representatives of the Board, they should call 601-987-3079 and ask for the Investigative Division.
