Yesterday a shooting threat was made towards a Mendenhall High School student via Snapchat and reported to authorities by the student’s parents. The Simpson County School District is now working with the Simpson County Sheriff’s Office and Mendenhall Police Department to resolve the issue.
The school district made a statement on their Facebook page that read: “Although it is upsetting to hear of this kind of threat in our school, we are committed to providing a safe educational environment for your children.”
All Simpson County School District schools are open today but Mendenhall Police officers and Simpson County Sheriff’s Office deputies are on campus at Mendenhall High School.
Superintendent Greg Paes said they have the snapchat and are working to find out who it came from. He said the student who received it did not know who sent it, but it looks like there could have been some interactions between them based on what it says.
“We have a safe environment each and every day,” said Paes. “We normally keep our doors locked in the society we have today and normally don’t have this kind of trouble.”
He wants parents to understand they they’re doing everything they can to keep their children safe. He said they need them at school so they can learn.
