Palmer Home for Children was first started in 1895 when William States Jacobs, who was serving at the First Presbyterian Church in Columbus when he issued a challenge to start an orphanage in Columbus. Since then Palmer Home has helped serve many of Mississippi’s children providing them with a home, hope, and a second chance.
Palmer Home is undergoing a major fundraising effort with the 6th Annual Palmer Home Radiothon, hosted by SuperTalk Mississippi. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 26th, listeners can tune in to SuperTalk Mississippi and hear directly from children, alumni, staff, and supporters of Palmer Home.
“This is one of the most exciting and anticipated events every year on the Palmer Home calendar,” said Sarah Hollis, Vice President of Engagement for Palmer Home. “Because Palmer Home is privately funded, we rely on public support to continue impacting the lives of the children in our care. We are truly grateful for SuperTalk and their commitment to our mission.”
Each year, Palmer Home has set increasingly high goals in anticipation of the statewide response, and each year those goals have been exceeded. Last year $232,000 was raised.
First Lady Deborah Bryant said there are many things that people take for granted like food on the table and love.
” I don’t care who you are, you don’t have to be First Lady, it doesn’t matter how much money you have, you hug them with a motherly love and give them all the love you can give them.”
The 12-hour Radiothon is broadcast live from the original Palmer Home campus in Columbus, MS. Listeners can tune into one of SuperTalk Mississippi’s network stations or listen online at www.supertalk.fm. Financial donations will be accepted throughout the day, with a group of volunteers to facilitate the high volume of calls.
