Today, Representative Sara Richardson Thomas of Indianola announced her retirement effective June 30th, 2018. In a letter to the Speaker of the House, Philip Gunn, Thomas said that it is time to pass down the mantle of public service to the next generation.
“There comes a time in the journey of life when you start making choices from a different place,” Thomas wrote. “And if a choice lines up so that it supports truth, health, happiness, wisdom, and love, it’s the right choice. For me that time is now, and the choice is perfectly clear, that this mangle of public service, which I have endeavored to shoulder with utmost respect, integrity, accountability, and sincere humility for those who elected me to serve, must be passed down to the next generation of leaders who will continue to champion the cause of the state’s citizenry.”
Rep. Thomas served District 31 which covers Bolivar, Humphreys, Sunflower, and Washington. During her years of service, Thomas served as the Vice Chairperson on the Tourism committee, as well as a member on the agriculture, appropriations, education, and ethics committees. She also served on the Committee to Investigate State Offices and the Committee on Youth and Family Affairs.
“I wish Rep. Thomas the best of luck in her retirement,” said Speaker Philip Gunn. “She is a good friend and a passionate legislator who will be missed at the Capitol.”
