1,400 inmates have been moved to a private prison in Mississippi.
After an agreement between the US Marshals and CoreCivic, the 1,350 inmates will be transferred to the Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility due to an “increased need for detention capacity.” The company did not specify where the inmates came from. CoreCivic CEO Damon Hininger said that the Tallahatchie Facility has the available capacity to accept detainee populations quickly.
“The U.S. Marshals Service has experienced an increasing need for detention capacity as its average daily prisoner population has increased throughout the past year,” Hininger said. “Our Tallahatchie County Correctional Facility has the available capacity to accept detainee populations quickly due to our existing staff of experienced, well-trained corrections professionals. We are pleased to provide the Marshals with immediate capacity to assist the agency as it carries out its critical public safety mission.”
The contract became effective on June 14th, and it expires in 2020 with unlimited two-year extension options thereafter upon mutual agreement.
This has been a busy two week period, for the Tallahatchie facility as they recently accepted 48 inmates from South Carolina. Again, no details were released as to why these 48 inmates were chosen and SC prison officials would not say if any of the inmates had something to do with the deadly prison riot that occurred back in April.
