The Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board announced that Stacey Pickering has been named as the new Executive Director of the veteran services agency. Mr. Pickering will oversee the daily operations of Mississippi’s four nursing homes for veterans and two veteran cemeteries, as well as veteran services and advocacy.
General James H. Garner, Chairman of Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board, said that Stacey brings a wealth of knowledge, proven leadership and strong relationships at the local, state and federal level to the Veterans Affairs Board and they are excited to have him lead and advocate for Mississippi veterans.
“It is a tremendous honor to serve Mississippi’s veterans. During my time in the Mississippi Air National Guard and during my own deployments and activations, I have continued to develop a passion to support those who are and those who have served our nation” said Stacey Pickering.
Pickering has served as Mississippi ‘s 41st State Auditor. First elected in 2007, Pickering has overseen the recovery of over 26 million dollars of misspent, embezzled or misappropriated tax dollars. Most recently, Pickering served as the national president of the National State Auditor’s Association.
Governor Phil Bryant made a brief statement saying he is grateful for Mr. Pickering’s exceptional service to Mississippi as State Auditor and knows that will continue at the Mississippi Veterans Affairs Board. His Press Secretary, Knox Graham, said once he has had the appropriate amount of time to fully vet candidates for the open position he will make an announcement on Mr. Pickering’s replacement.
When News Mississippi reached out to the State Auditor’s office, they were unaware of this announcement because other news outlets released this information prior to Stacey being able to talk to his employees about the change.
