A welfare check led to an arrest for the Oxford Police Department.

Last week, OPD officers were dispatched to the Square for a welfare check on a child, and when they arrived, the child reported physical abuse. The child, whose age and gender were not disclosed, was immediately taken to a local hospital.

An investigation identified 24-year-old Anthony Powell, of Pontotoc, as the suspect, and he was promptly arrested. Upon being transferred to the Lafayette County Detention Center, Powell was charged with aggravated domestic violence and possession of child pornography.

A judge set Powell’s bond at $150,000.
